The West Bengal Urdu Academy was established on 1st April 1978, and started functioning from December, 1979 under the administrative control of Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal.

The aims and objectives of the Academy are to promote, advance and encourage the study of Urdu language and literature in the State by means of translation and publication of scholarly works in Urdu on various and comprehensive topics, printing and publication of Urdu version of popular Bengali Classics and other Bengali works translated into Urdu, awarding scholarships & prizes to exhibitions, organising Mushairas, Drama Performances, Symposiums, Orations etc. Above all the West Bengal Urdu Academy. to advise and assist the State Government in the formulation and implementation of its policies towards promotion, propagation and development of Urdu.
